Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Krasnoyarsk

In the center of Krasnoyarsk stands a majestic yellow temple, the cathedral of the women's Annunciation Monastery, which is the only convent in the central part of the city. This monastery, the first in the modern history of the Krasnoyarsk diocese, was founded in 1995 during the restoration of the temple. The history of the temple itself is much richer. It became the third stone church in Krasnoyarsk after the lost Resurrection Cathedral and the Protection Church. Initially, the wooden Protection Church was moved here. However, in 1795, after the consecration of the main altar of the stone Protection Church, the residents requested the construction of a new stone church. A few years later, the wooden church was moved again and reconsecrated, and on its site, a large stone church for that time began to be built. The Annunciation Cathedral was laid in 1804, and its architecture reflects the Empire style, which had then come to Siberia, replacing Baroque. The cathedral is painted in yellow, characteristic of the Empire style, and adorned with classical pilasters and a pediment. However, its shape still bears the influence of Siberian Baroque. The builders adopted elements of the new style but could not completely change the traditional "ship" structure, which gave the temple bulkiness and straightforwardness, although it remains majestic.

This temple represents an interesting monument to the transition of eras and the mixing of styles. The construction was carried out by Yenisei stonemasons under the guidance of the Irkutsk master Ivan Prokhorov, and the work was overseen by the Krasnoyarsk merchant Yegor Porokhovshchikov. The main stage of construction was completed in 1812, but finishing work continued for about another ten years. The church became two-storied with four chapels. In the mid-19th century, the church was expanded by adding a chapel in honor of the Venerable Zosima and Savvatiy of Solovki to the south, along with a sacristy, surrounded by a fence, and a chapel in honor of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God was built nearby. Emperor Alexander I gifted the church a valuable icon of St. Alexander Nevsky, and in his honor, one of the chapels was consecrated. During the Soviet era, the church was closed and used as a warehouse.

The revival of the church began in the 1990s when a women's community formed around it. A two-story building and several utility structures were built for the new monastery at the church. The restoration of the Annunciation Cathedral was completed in the 21st century.
