On July 10, 1899, in the Tiflis province, Tsarevich Georgy Alexandrovich, the second son of Emperor Alexander III and brother of Emperor Nicholas II, died suddenly at the age of 28 from tuberculosis.

Contemporaries recalled that from childhood, Georgy had the strongest health among the royal children, and nothing foreshadowed trouble. However, service in the navy took a toll on his health, and he fell ill with tuberculosis. The illness was so serious that the Tsarevich could not attend his father's funeral and remained in the Caucasus, where he felt better, but the mountain air only postponed the inevitable.

In 1895, as the heir to the throne, Georgy Alexandrovich traveled abroad for the last time. Together with his mother, he visited Denmark, after which he returned to the Caucasus, where he spent his final years. During this trip, he suffered a severe attack and was bedridden for a long time. The young Tsarevich struggled with his condition but tried not to show it.

On the fateful day of July 10, 1899, he was riding a gasoline-powered bicycle, which was then called a prototype of a motorcycle. Suddenly, he felt unwell, and blood poured from his throat. He was forced to dismount and lie on the ground. Attempts to save him were unsuccessful, and he died lying on the road.

The body of the Tsarevich was soon sent on its final journey across Russia. No one knew that these would be the last funerals of a Russian heir, as the next two Tsareviches were killed by the Bolsheviks.

The coffin arrived in the capital on July 25, and two days after the solemn requiem at St. Peter and Paul Cathedral, he was buried in the tomb of the ruling dynasty next to his father.
