Mount Plodskaya in the Narovchat district on the border with Mordovia is known for its stunning natural beauty and mysterious underground labyrinths, as well as the monastic feats of past centuries. It is one of the most visited holy places in the Penza region. The first mentions of the monastery's construction date back to 1680. The caves, stretching 670 meters, are among the longest in Europe. They consist of five tiers: the first at 11-12 degrees, the second at 8-9 degrees, and the third at 6-7 degrees. All of this is located in a small mountain, at the foot of which is a spring.

By the blessing of Archbishop Philaret (Karagodin) of Penza and Kuznetsk and the decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on August 21, 2007, a separate monastery was established at the site of the caves, the Skano Cave Men's Monastery of Saints Anthony and Theodosius. Today, thanks to the efforts of benefactors and the monastic brotherhood, the complex continues to be restored: the entrance to the caves has been improved, many areas have been cleared and bricked. On the other side, another entrance has been equipped, leading to the underground temple in honor of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. The ensemble of the revived Skano Monastery also includes a wooden church in honor of the Caves Icon of the Mother of God, the cells of monks and workers, the spring of Saints Anthony and Theodosius of the Caves with bathing areas, and on the mountain near the altar of the former church lies the grave of the murdered Father Tikhon.
