The main attraction of the ancient city of Shuya is the Cathedral of the Resurrection of the Lord. Its construction began in 1792 with funds from the townspeople and lasted six years. Soon after the completion of the construction, the cathedral was adorned with paintings, and inside a gilded iconostasis was installed, costing 12 thousand rubles.
The cathedral, built in the classical style, has five domes with brass coverings coated in gold. In the early 19th century, it was decided to build a tall bell tower next to the church. Work began in 1810 but immediately faced difficulties. Due to various reasons, the construction was delayed, and in 1819 the unfinished bell tower collapsed. As a result, it had to start all over again, and only in 1833 was the four-tiered bell tower completed. At the beginning of the last century, a new refectory with a three-domed completion was added to the cathedral.
By the time of the 1917 revolution, the Resurrection Church was considered one of the most beautiful and largest in the area. Four priests served in the parish, among them was the future priest-martyr Father Pavel Svetozarov.
On March 15, 1922, a tragedy occurred in the cathedral square related to the attempt to seize church valuables. Parishioners sought to protect their church from desecration, offering their personal belongings in exchange for the church valuables, but soldiers opened machine-gun fire on them.
As a result, some parishioners were wounded or killed, and the cathedral's rector, Father Pavel, was soon executed on charges of organizing resistance to the Soviet authorities. Today, the Resurrection Cathedral has been restored, and its bell tower is the tallest building in the Ivanovo region. A monument has been erected in front of the cathedral in memory of the victims of the Shuya shooting of 1922.
