Prince Alexander Grigorievich Shcherbatov, born on October 10 (22), 1850, in St. Petersburg and died on April 24 (May 7), 1915, in Warsaw, was the president of the Moscow Society of Agriculture and a chamberlain since 1899. He also founded and led the 'Russian Union of Trade and Industry' and was the chairman of the Union of Russian People in 1905 and 1909.

The painting 'Days of Vengeance Have Come Upon Us... Let Us Repent So That the Lord Does Not Destroy Us,' created in 1905 and 1907, is believed to be by Apollon Apollonovich Maikov. It depicts the main founders of the Union of the Russian People defending the tsarist authority from demons: igumen Arseny, protodeacon Ioann, A. Dubrovin, I. Baranov, V. Purishkevich, N. Oznobishin, V. Gringmut, Prince Shcherbatov, P. Bulatsel, R. Tregubov, N. Zhedenov, N. Bolshakov, and Father Iliodor. Sacred texts state that God destroyed people when they turned to idolatry.

In 1912, two years before the start of the world war, Shcherbatov published his last significant work 'The State Defense of Russia.' In it, he claimed that war was inevitable and would be brutal and unscrupulous. Analyzing the reasons for the defeat in the war with Japan, he wrote that they were exclusively moral and stemmed from a lack of resolve to win among the upper echelons. In his opinion, in the upcoming global struggle, Russia must defend its possessions and interests, as well as become the only power capable of using its military strength to prevent conflicts among other states, thus being the guardian of peace. However, he emphasized that no weaponry or even brilliant commanders would save Russia from destruction if there was no church-parish unity of the Russian people.
