On March 28, 1984, the Sharypovo City Council of People's Deputies decided to open a city historical and local lore museum in Sharypovo, which operated on a voluntary basis. The museum was located in dormitory No. 23.

On October 10, 1984, the city public museum began its work. The first exhibitions were dedicated to the history of the city's party and Komsomol organizations, Komsomol brigades, the construction of Sharypovo, and KATEK facilities. Initially, the museum was called the "Museum of the History of KATEK," and since the city was named after Chernenko at that time, the central place in the exhibition was occupied by materials dedicated to the memory of K. U. Chernenko, a native of the Yenisei province.

In 1986, the museum moved to a new building in the sixth microdistrict, covering an area of about 150 square meters.

In 1994, the museum became part of the state network of museums with a historical and local lore profile.

In 1996, the "History of KATEK" museum was transformed into the "Sharypovo Regional Museum-Exhibition and Excursion Complex."

In 2003, the museum moved to a new building, the former kindergarten "Scarlet Sails," with an area of 625 square meters.

In 2010, two new exhibitions appeared in the museum: one dedicated to archaeological finds and the other representing an ethnographic hall recreating the atmosphere of a Siberian village house.

In 2011, the "Sharypovo Regional Museum-Exhibition and Excursion Complex" was renamed the municipal budget institution "Sharypovo Local Lore Museum."

Over the years, the museum has been headed by Natalia Mamonova, Lyudmila Vegera, Margarita Kurochkina, Svetlana Tripel, Maria Sheremetyeva, and since July 2017, Svetlana Alexandrovna Zamarayeva.

The museum features 7 permanent exhibitions. The "Paleontology" exhibition showcases the stages of development of fossil organisms found in the area. Among the exhibits are fossils of late Mesozoic invertebrates: ammonites, belemnites, and gastropods. Representatives from the Middle Jurassic period are also presented: turtles, bones of herbivorous and carnivorous dinosaurs such as Stegosaurus, sauropods, and Aristoteles' killer whale. The Holocene of the Quaternary period is represented by the bones of the woolly rhinoceros, mammoth, bison, and primitive horse. Some paleontological items are unique to Russia. The "Living Nature" exhibition features a collection of "Siberian and Tropical Butterflies," consisting of 196 specimens. The collection includes 17 families: whites, owlets, swallowtails, fireflies, and others. There is also a collection of "Minerals and Rocks," introducing the diversity of minerals, including the stone "bereshit," named after the Beresh River flowing in the Sharypovo district. The exhibition also presents stuffed animals and birds from the Sharypovo district. The "Archaeology" exhibition includes materials from monuments of various historical eras located in the Sharypovo district, from the Upper Paleolithic to the culture of the Yenisei Kyrgyz. It features over 300 exhibits obtained from excavations of archaeological sites by the Siberian Archaeological Expedition led by S. V. Krasnienko and A. V. Subbotin. The "Gifts to the City of Sharypovo" exhibition showcases items gifted to the city by notable individuals and organizations. Among the significant gifts are a vase belonging to K. U. Chernenko, a symbolic key from the Holy Trinity Cathedral, and a souvenir hockey stick signed by players of the USSR national hockey team. The "Military Glory" exhibition includes authentic items belonging to soldiers of the Great Patriotic War. Here, awards of participants are displayed along with photographs and biographies of those who participated in combat actions and forged victory in the rear. The "Ethnography" exhibition creates an understanding of the folk life and culture in the area at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, when the village of Sharypovo existed. It recreates the interior of a peasant's house in a Siberian village of the 19th century. The "History of KATEK" exhibition introduces the history of the formation of the city of Sharypovo and the last All-Union Komsomol shock construction project, using items from the 1970s and 1980s.
