The museum was opened on April 12, 2002. The exhibition halls are located on the first and second floors of the building. By the end of 2019, the museum's main collection numbered 2,344 items. The museum's collection is mainly replenished through donations from local residents and guests from other regions of the republic. The museum's exhibitions sequentially tell the history of the region. Among the permanent exhibitions are: "A Look into the Past," "Life in the District in 1922 and 1940," "Labor and Combat Feats of the Sharan Residents," "They Are Proud of Them," "History of Public Organizations," "Time of Hopes and Successes," "Ethnography," and "Nature Corner."

The museum plays an important role in the cultural life of the district. Materials from research and search work are used to create new exhibitions and presentation materials for various thematic events. Regular overview and thematic excursions, museum lessons, lessons of courage, patriotic hours, meeting evenings, and other events are organized.

The museum is visited by about 2,000 people annually.
