The Shakhty Local History Museum is located in the center of the city of Shakhty in an old building constructed in 1896, which is a monument of architecture. However, today its beauty is hidden under an unfortunate plaster covering.

Since its construction in 1896, this building housed the Alexandrovsk Church School, named in honor of the coronation of Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna. The school was considered one of the best in the city, providing all the necessary conditions for the comfortable education of children. After the revolution, the school was closed, the city was renamed, and later a local history museum opened in the building.

The Shakhty Local History Museum is a large municipal museum in the Rostov region, with about 13,000 exhibits in its collection. It features ancient icons, photographs, historical documents from various eras, household items, and personal belongings of the townspeople, as well as around 200 paintings donated by the Academy of Arts.

The museum has themed halls: "Old City," "Bourgeois Life," "The City’s Military Glory," and "Nature of the Don Region." The museum's art gallery hosts exhibitions of graphics, painting, applied arts, as well as musical and poetry evenings and meetings with famous people from the city. In total, the museum has five thematic halls. In two halls dedicated to the events of World War II, there are a Maxim machine gun, a Mosin three-line rifle, personal belongings of soldiers, photographs, and documents. One of the exhibitions is dedicated to the nature of the Don region and includes stuffed animals and birds that inhabit the area. The museum also provides information about the history of coal mining in the region, showcases the bourgeois interior of residents from the 19th and 20th centuries, and features a model of a destroyed church.
