In 2018, the district local history museum celebrated its 30th anniversary. It was founded in 1988, and the first exhibitions opened to visitors in 1990 in the building of a former merchant house on Krasnoarmeyskaya Street. The museum is currently located on the second floor of a sports school building, occupying four rooms and a corridor in an annex.
The museum's collection includes over 5,800 items, with the main fund consisting of more than 5,300 units. The permanent exhibitions feature 3,178 exhibits that tell the history of the Shabalinsky region, including military history, peasant life of the early and mid-20th century, as well as folk art. The museum has two permanent halls: a military history hall and a history and everyday life hall, as well as an exhibition hall.
Each year, the museum hosts over 20 exhibitions, organizes tours, thematic hours, museum classes, seminars and lectures, literary-musical evenings, and master classes. Author photo exhibitions by Shabalinsky photographer V. Zhuravlev are particularly popular.
The museum is visited by more than 8,000 people annually. It constantly seeks new forms of engagement, interacting with various segments of the population, including children and youth, and fulfills an educational function.
