The Saratov State Conservatory named after L.V. Sobinov, located in Saratov, is the third conservatory in Russia. It was founded in 1912 on the basis of a music school.

Initially, the institution was called the Saratov Alekseev Conservatory of the Imperial Russian Music Society in honor of the heir to the throne, Tsarevich Alexei.

The conservatory building, designed in the pseudo-Gothic style, was constructed in 1902 at the corner of German and Nikolskaya streets. Its construction was made possible by the efforts of Princess Meshcherskaya and the project of city architect Alexander Yagna. It was originally intended for a music school.

I.Yu. Slavin convinced the Russian Music Society to open the third conservatory specifically in Saratov, rather than in Voronezh. After that, the building was renovated by S.A. Kalistratov and became one of the architectural landmarks of the city center, as well as its calling card.
