On the night of May 2 to 3, 1945, in Hintereschellenberg, the remnants of the 1st Russian National Army of the Wehrmacht, under the command of Major General A. Holmston-Smyslovsky, numbering about 500 men and fully armed, crossed the border between the Greater German Reich and Liechtenstein in search of refuge. The first negotiations took place at the inn "Wirtschaft Zum Löwen," and as a result, the army was granted asylum in the Principality of Liechtenstein. This state was the only one to refuse to comply with Soviet demands for extradition. Two and a half years later, the Russians were given the opportunity to leave for countries of their choice.
