Russians in Guatemala

Фото 1
In Guatemala, our compatriots are engaged in business, education, science, and tourism. In the capital, also called Guatemala, about 50 Russians live, actively participating in the work of the Association of Russian Compatriots (ARSG).

Some of our compatriots work in a mining company in the northeast of the country, in the Izabal department. In the municipality of El Estor, around 100 Russian citizens live, including company employees and their families. In total, approximately 300 Russians reside in Guatemala.

ARSG, with the support of the Russian Embassy in Guatemala, organizes events dedicated to Russian state holidays. These events attract not only representatives of the Russian-speaking diaspora but also Guatemalans interested in Russian history, culture, and language. They are conducted in both Russian and Spanish. Among the Guatemalan guests, one can find people of various professions and preschool children studying the Russian language.

Russian language teacher Yulia Bludova, who lives in Guatemala, notes: "Guatemalans show great interest in Russia, especially in its culture. In bookstores, one can always find works of Russian classical literature. The most popular among them is 'Crime and Punishment.' Guatemalans enjoy attending the ballet 'Swan Lake' performed by the Russian National Ballet Theater, which often tours Central America. Many want to study the Russian language. Why is there such interest in the Russian language and culture in this country? Perhaps it is related to the national character. Guatemalans are open and cheerful people, while Russia is a country with a rich cultural and spiritual heritage."
