Fifty years ago, the Russian community in Denver was virtually unnoticed, but today it numbers over 50,000 people. Immigrants from the Soviet Union began arriving in this region of America in the 1980s. The largest concentration of Russian-speaking residents is found in the Glendale area and southeast Denver. The city has a recently renovated Russian library, and at Oneida Plaza, often referred to as 'Russian Plaza', there are many private businesses owned by immigrants from Russia and former Soviet countries.
Today, the Russian-speaking community in Denver and Colorado is actively engaged in business in real estate, legal, and insurance services. Many find themselves in science, particularly in physics, mathematics, biotechnology, and engineering, as well as in the information technology industry, where many talented young people work. Russian-speaking doctors, having validated their qualifications and undergone necessary training in the USA, treat patients in private clinics and large hospitals, opening their own medical offices, where knowledge of the Russian language becomes a significant advantage.
Various events are regularly organized within the Russian-speaking community of Denver: exhibitions, holidays, fairs, festivals, concerts, and picnics. Everyone can find entertainment to their liking, showcase their talents or products, socialize with fellow countrymen, and make new friends. When meeting someone, you will surely be asked where you are from, and they will be happy if you turn out to be a compatriot. There are also Russian-speaking churches, where Orthodox Christians gladly attend both on holidays and weekdays.
For those facing temporary difficulties, support groups, including anonymous ones, are available. Free English language courses are offered. Russian schools educate children not only in general subjects but also provide high-level creative classes. Studios, clubs, and sports sections with Russian-speaking instructors are in operation.
