Russians in Alabama (USA)

Ekaterina Voloshina from Moscow shared that Alabama ranks eighth among the most affordable states to live in. It has the lowest cost of the consumer basket. For example, her family spends only about 800-1000 dollars a month on groceries. However, the sales tax is 10%, and this tax is added to any price in stores or restaurants. Most residents of Alabama live in houses, which are often single-story, and less frequently two-story. Rent for a house ranges from 800 to 2000 dollars a month. Real estate can be purchased with mortgages at low rates from 1 to 3%, but mortgages are only given to those with good credit history. There are many ways to save on food. For example, Walmart has a lowest price policy. You can take a pack of cookies, show the cashier a photo of the same pack from another store with a lower price, and pay the competitor's price. It sounds incredible, but it's true.

Alina Tumshovets from Krasnoyarsk shared her impressions of the local accent: "I live in a fairly large city, Mobile. I must note that one third of the city is made up of Black Americans, although I find it hard to believe since in my school they are about 90%! It's great because the opportunity to communicate with them is a stroke of luck, especially in terms of language. If you understand Black Americans, consider yourself a master of English. Yes, it was difficult to understand them; they speak in slang. Even my host brother admits that he doesn't always understand them. They speak as if 'outside of language.'"

Some former citizens of the CIS have managed to open their own businesses in Alabama. Oksana Leslie talked about one such case: "Owners of apartments on the Gulf of Mexico enter into a contract with a company that manages their private property, accommodates vacationing clients, and brings in income. But every two years, owners are required to change bed linens and mattresses. I have a contract with them for disposal. I don't throw it away; I offer mattresses at a low price: small ones for 50 dollars, large ones for 100. I charge 50 dollars for delivery if needed. Everyone is happy."
