The Russian-speaking community in Houston is largely shaped by the presence of major oil companies actively working in Russia and the collaboration between Russia and the U.S. at the Johnson Space Center. In April 2007, NASA signed a contract with the Russian space agency in Moscow worth $719 million to extend the contract for the International Space Station, ensuring crew support and cargo delivery until 2011.

Since 1997, a Russian amateur theater has been operating in Houston, along with a cultural center and the publication of the newspaper "Our Texas" in Russian. The city library has a section with books in Russian. Of the 50,000 Russian-speaking residents in Texas, about 30,000 live in Houston, primarily in the western part of the city, in the Galleria area.

Houston also has a library at a Russian store with a wide selection of books, and the city library has a dedicated shelf for Russian books, so reading enthusiasts do not lack for literature.

As for stores, there are three in the city, plus the restaurant "Russian Bear." In these stores, one can purchase any Russian products, ranging from millet, bagels, jam, and bread to red and black caviar.
