Sergius of Radonezh is often mentioned as the saint of the Russian land due to his ascetic activities and significant contribution to the development of Orthodoxy in the Russian principalities. This outstanding individual not only performed numerous deeds himself but also inspired his relatives and disciples to do the same. Many centuries have passed, but ancient monasteries and churches remain witnesses to his works, preserved despite numerous raids and an era of godlessness. One such significant monument is the Mother of God Nativity Monastery, founded by Archbishop Fyodor of Rostov, a nephew of Sergius of Radonezh. The first mention of the monastery dates back to the late 14th century, and by the end of the 17th century, the first stone building, the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God, was constructed. In the early next century, the temple was adorned by the best masters, and these frescoes are now considered a pearl of Orthodoxy.

The history of the Mother of God Nativity Monastery is filled not only with periods of flourishing but also with difficult times. Among the positive events, one can note the construction of the five-domed Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God in the mid-19th century and the patronage of many high-ranking individuals of that time. Particularly significant were the visits of the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, the wife of the murdered Emperor Paul I, as well as the future saint John of Kronstadt and the future saint Patriarch Tikhon.

With the arrival of Soviet power, the monastery was desecrated and closed, losing its bell tower and most of its walls, while the Tikhvin Church was destroyed. Against the backdrop of all the destruction, only the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God relatively survived, preserving its unique frescoes. Only in 1990 was the monastery returned to the faithful, and later its restoration began. Today, the monastery is active, but it is no longer possible to fully restore its former splendor.
