On June 17, 1931, in Antibes, France, the great duke Peter Nikolaevich passed away, the second son of Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich (the elder) and grandson of Nicholas I. He was a lieutenant general and general adjutant of the Russian army. His remains rest in the crypt of the Russian Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Cannes, next to his wife Militsa Nikolaevna, who died twenty years after him.
