On January 4, 1974, the director of the Kirs Cable Plant, Evgeny Ivanovich Litvyakov, signed an order to establish a museum of the plant's history. The initiative was led on a voluntary basis by the head of rolling shop No. 8 and local historian Mikhail Ivanovich Chirkov.

The collection of historical materials and exhibits was significantly supported by N.A. Glukhikh, E.N. Oskolkov, L.V. Filippov, and others.

On December 29, 1977, the museum of the history of the 'Kirs Cable' plant opened its doors to visitors for the first time in the plant management building. The first director was Nina Mikhailovna Chebotaryova.

In December 1982, by order of Alexander Vasilyevich Butorin, the museum was moved to the building of the district House of Culture, now the Recreation Center 'Dosug'. The increase in space by almost five times required significant work to organize the exhibitions, which was carried out by the new museum director Neonella Nikolaevna Shironiina, who worked there for 16 years. During her time, the museum was awarded a certificate of appreciation from the Ministry of Culture of the USSR and received the title of 'people's museum'.

On January 1, 2001, the museum of the history of the 'Kirs Cable' plant became a district historical museum, transitioning to municipal jurisdiction.

Over its 40 years of existence, the museum has collected a rich array of materials on the history, ethnography, economy, and culture of the Verkhnekamsky region. The collections, supplemented by donations from local residents and materials gathered in historical and ethnographic expeditions, number over 3,000 storage units.

Museum staff engage in research, preservation, and educational activities, actively participating in events such as 'Museum Night', 'Night of the Arts', City Day, Children's Day, and others.

In cooperation with schools in the region and the technical school, lessons of courage, living history, local history games, and theatrical museum events are held.

The museum initiates city tours titled 'Kirs: Yesterday and Today'.

Each year, museum staff organize more than 10 diverse exhibitions from their own collections and those of other museums in the region.

The museum also provides methodological assistance in writing works on the history of the native land.

Since January 2006, a branch of the museum has been the museum of the history of the village of Kai, which has been named the House-Museum of F.E. Dzerzhinsky since 2016.
