The emergence of any city inevitably leads to the creation of a place where its residents find eternal peace. For the cemetery in Pyatigorsk, the governor of the region, General Karl Fyodorovich von Stahl, chose a picturesque spot at the foot of Mount Mashuk, from where there was a magnificent view of the city under construction and the Caucasus Mountains. The officers accompanying him recounted that he uttered words that became prophetic: "Now it is necessary for someone significant to be buried here, to begin with." A few days later, the prominent cavalier and important figure of the Yermolov era, Karl von Stahl, suddenly passed away. On July 28, 1824, he became the first to be buried in the cemetery he had chosen. This day is considered the founding date of the cemetery "Necropolis" in Pyatigorsk.

In 1828, the construction of the Lazarev Church began, designed by the Bernadazzi brothers. It was completed only in 1857, but it stood for a short time. The building, erected on poor ground, developed cracks, and it was dismantled. A new Lazarev temple was built at the entrance to the Necropolis in 1902. Despite the extensive territory of the cemetery, by the end of the 19th century, space became insufficient, and burials began over old graves, first in the second layer and then in the third. In 1916, it was decided to conserve the cemetery.

The Necropolis is a stone chronicle of the city. The Pyatigorsk Necropolis is the resting place of outstanding architects, the Bernadazzi brothers. Here lies the family tomb of the Shan-Girey-Verzilins, and M.Yu. Lermontov was originally buried here, followed six days after his death by his friend I.E. Dyadkovsky, who could not survive the loss of the poet. Among the burials in the Pyatigorsk necropolis are graves of statesmen, military personnel, scientists, doctors, engineers, figures of literature and art, teachers, honorary citizens of the city, and nurses. There are many great names here, but unfortunately, not all burials have been preserved. However, it is important to remember those who dedicated their lives to Pyatigorsk and contributed to the history of a great country.
