In Iceland, there is an Orthodox parish of St. Nicholas and a small house church dedicated to Nicholas of Myra. The community plans to build a large Orthodox church in Reykjavik.

Several years ago, after lengthy negotiations, the Reykjavik city hall provided the Orthodox community with a prestigious plot near the city port, in the tourist center of the old town. The plot was leased for 50 years with the possibility of extension for the same period. This is a favorable location, as the church will be well visible to arriving ships and yachts. Currently, there is only a stone laid as the foundation of the church in May 2011.

The church project was developed at the Andrei Rublev Center for Church Art under the guidance of Alexander Soldatov, who also consulted on the construction of the cathedral in Paris. The church in Reykjavik will be 22 meters tall, not including the cross.

According to Anna Valdimarsdottir, director of the Cultural and Spiritual Center for Russian-speaking compatriots, a Cultural and Spiritual Center will be established at the church. It will house a Russian library and a school that has been operating in Reykjavik for 13 years. Exhibitions, meetings, and conferences are planned. This will serve as a kind of bridge connecting the Russian community in Iceland with Russia and introducing Iceland to Russian cultural heritage.

It has already been decided that the church will be consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas, whose name the parish in Reykjavik has borne since 2001.

A certain amount has been allocated for the construction of the church by Moscow benefactors, but it is still insufficient. Fundraising for the construction is ongoing.
