On June 14, 1914, the port city of Constanța on the Black Sea became a crucial location on the map of Europe. Here, for the first time on Romanian soil, King Carol I of Romania met Emperor Nicholas II of Russia. This was the last foreign trip of the Russian imperial family.

The Romanian newspaper "Dobrogea Jună" described the day as follows: "At 8 o'clock, Ovidiu set sail from Constanța to meet the Imperial yacht 'Standart', followed by 'Kahul' and 'Almaz', and then the entire Russian Black Sea squadron. The city was adorned with chrysanthemums and daisies.

The arrival of the Russian squadron in the harbor was greeted with 31 cannon salutes. Six airplanes took to the sky over the sea.

At the port entrance, the yacht 'Standart' was operated by a Romanian crew, and the docking was carried out with exceptional precision under the command of Captain Botez-Jean Bart.

Ministers were not allowed to attend the meeting of the heads of state, as the visit was declared personal. Grand Duchess Olga captured memorable moments on camera, and a documentary film was made for the occasion.

The mayor of Constanța, Virgil Andronescu, presented the guests with bread and salt on a huge golden tray specially ordered for this event. The tray was decorated with the city coat of arms and the engraving "Romania, June 1914."

The families visited the cathedral, where a religious ceremony was held under the guidance of Bishop Nifon. After the service, the Russian imperial family and the Romanian royal family approached the iconostasis, kissing the icon of Saint Nicholas and the golden cross, which was then presented to the emperor in a velvet box. Grand Duchess Olga attracted attention, as there were high expectations regarding her possible marriage to Prince Carol. Rumors claimed that during the visit, not only a political alliance between Russia and Romania was discussed, but also a potential dynastic union between Carol, the eldest son of the Romanian heir couple, and Grand Duchess Olga. This issue had been raised in March 1914 during the visit of the Romanian heir prince Ferdinand to St. Petersburg.

The day concluded with a state dinner at the palace.
