The Poshekhonsky Local History Museum is a unique phenomenon of provincial culture. It was founded in 1974 at the initiative of local residents of the town of Poshekhonye and with the support of the district leadership. The purpose of creating the museum was to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of the region and to foster a respectful attitude towards the history of the native land and its people.

The museum houses about 4,500 exhibits, which are presented in halls dedicated to the history of the region, urban life, crafts and trades, Poshekhon flax, the Great Patriotic War, as well as the nature, flora, and fauna of the region. The exhibitions also cover the history of Poshekhonye in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The land of Poshekhonye is known for its traditions: here they produced gold leaf, made the famous "Poshekhon" cheese, and grew rich flax harvests. This unique region is famous for its magnificent nature, rich history, and talented craftsmen.

Today, Poshekhonye is considered one of the most beautiful areas in the northern part of the region. Locals and visitors affectionately call it the "Northern Venice."

Interactive programs have been developed for museum visitors, such as "My Flax, Little Flax," "Poshekhons, Oddballs," and "Wedding at the Museum."

The Poshekhonsky Local History Museum is an accessible institution that actively engages in educational activities. The museum conducts thematic classes for schoolchildren and preschoolers, as well as meetings for veterans of different generations. Students from schools, agricultural colleges, and residents of the town and district turn to the museum for materials on the history of the region. The museum develops and implements new projects and programs, using playful and educational forms of engagement with visitors.
