The Gunpowder Tower, a round tower of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, is located in the elevated part between the Dmitrievskaya and Georgievskaya towers.

Its name is associated with the fact that in the 17th century, gunpowder and artillery ammunition were stored here. In the land survey book of 1621, the tower is mentioned as Spasskaya, and behind it was the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Lord.

Before the restoration in 1952, it was believed that the Gunpowder Tower had three tiers until researchers discovered a fourth, underground level. The lower tier is adjacent to walls with embrasures. Interestingly, by 1952, limestone stalactites had formed on the ceilings of the combat chambers, similar to those in caves. The lower floors of the tower, without frontal embrasures, were adapted as caponiers for artillery fire, protecting the approaches to neighboring fortifications. The upper tier has 11 combat windows. In 1621, three small-caliber arquebuses were located on the tower, firing projectiles weighing 0.3 kg.

In the lower part of the tower, traces of numerous repairs carried out in 1786 and in the 19th century are visible. In 1975, to mark the 30th anniversary of Victory, a memorial plaque was installed in the wall between the Gunpowder and Dmitrievskaya towers in honor of the military units formed in the city of Gorky and fighting on the front during the Great Patriotic War.
