In the history of Russian opera, there have been many artists who gained worldwide fame, and some of them remain well-known to this day. However, not all talented singers were so fortunate. Over the past century, many soloists of Russian opera have remained unknown to new generations of theater lovers. One such unjustly forgotten genius is Pavel Alekseevich Porai-Koshits. This outstanding singer of the second half of the 19th century was among the best Russian artists and performed alongside legends such as Fyodor Ivanovich Shalyapin and Leonid Vitalievich Sobinov.

Pavel Alekseevich was born on December 26, 1863, into a peasant family in the Kiev province and received his initial education not at a conservatory, but at the Kiev Theological Seminary. No one could have predicted what future awaited the simple seminarian. However, his singing talent was noticed by a wealthy patron who helped the young man take lessons from the famous Russian teacher Fyodor Petrovich Komissarzhevsky at the Moscow Conservatory. This was followed by training in Milan, and the former peasant unexpectedly found himself on the best stages of Europe, performing in Italy, Greece, Spain, and even South America. In Russia, Pavel Alekseevich first performed as a world-renowned singer. In 1893, he was invited to the Bolshoi Theatre, where he spent the next eleven years, reaching the peak of his career and popularity.

Unfortunately, fate was cruel to one who stood alongside the great Russian singers Shalyapin and Sobinov at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Pavel Alekseevich's career ended as abruptly as it began. During one of his performances, he lost his voice, which was a devastating blow for him. His dismissal from the Bolshoi Theatre led to tragedy; on March 15, 1904, 40-year-old Pavel Alekseevich took his own life by shooting himself. He was buried at the Vagankovo Cemetery. A few years later, his daughter Nina Pavlovna continued his legacy, and later his granddaughter Marina.
