During the years of Soviet power, almost all Orthodox churches in Azov were destroyed, so with the beginning of the revival of Orthodoxy in the city, it became necessary to urgently build new churches. In 1993, Metropolitan Vladimir of Rostov blessed the creation of a new parish in honor of the Azov Icon of the Mother of God in Azov, Rostov region.

The name of the parish and future church "Icon of the Mother of God of Azov" symbolized the liturgical perpetuation of the Orthodox residents of Azov. For temporary services of the new parish, the former cinema "Don" was used. After renovations, services began to be held in the cinema.

The design of the new church in honor of the Azov Icon of the Mother of God began only in 1996, and in 1998, after its consecration by Archbishop Panteleimon of Rostov, construction started.

Construction work continued until 2005, after which several years were spent on the arrangement of the church. To expedite construction, a Board of Trustees was created in Azov, which included deputies of the Azov City Duma and heads of city enterprises. At the request of the Cossack leadership of the region, the church was granted regimental status.

As a result, the total height of the church with domes reached about 30 meters. The church is designed to accommodate up to 300 people at the same time, and the largest bell is the one-and-a-half-meter "Prince Vladimir," weighing 1270 kilograms. The bell was cast in Kamensk-Uralsky and donated to the church. Today, the church is fully equipped and open to the faithful.
