In the early 20th century, at the corner of Dvoryanskaya (now International) and Khristoroždestvenskaya (now Red) streets, there were a police station and a fire brigade. They occupied a two-story stone building located deep in the garden from the side of Dvoryanskaya Street. In the courtyard of the fire brigade stood an octagonal fire tower, slightly over 30 meters tall, which had an observation deck. On cold winter days, when the temperature dropped below 20 degrees, a black ball was hung on the deck, signaling the cancellation of classes in the city schools. The remnants of the tower were removed in the early 1950s, while the fire brigade operated until the 1970s. After its closure, the building was demolished, and a residential building No. 45B was constructed in its place.
