On August 31, 1986, the passenger ship 'Admiral Nakhimov' was on a cruise route from Odessa to Yalta, Novorossiysk, Sochi, Batumi, and back to Odessa.

On that day, as it was leaving the Tsukrova Bay, near Cape Doob, 2.2 miles from shore, at 11:12 PM, the 'Admiral Nakhimov' collided with the cargo ship 'Petr Vasev'. Just 7 minutes after the collision, the passenger ship sank, listing more than 60 degrees to the starboard side.

According to official data, 423 people died on the night of the disaster, and 64 people are still listed as missing.

During the search operations on September 10 and 17, 1986, two divers lost their lives.

Half of all the deceased (216 people) were residents of the Ukrainian SSR.

The court found both captains guilty of the shipwreck and sentenced each to 15 years in prison. In 1992, both captains were pardoned and released.
