In the square opposite the Don Public Library, you can see a majestic stone Pilgrim Cross, established in honor of Cyril and Methodius. This cross was erected and consecrated in May 1994, created by the renowned Moscow sculptor Vyacheslav Klykov. The cross is carved from stone, adorned with images and inscriptions, and, as is customary, faces east.

The tradition of erecting pilgrim crosses in Russia has existed for a very long time. They were usually placed at crossroads or at the entrance and exit of a city or village. In front of such a cross, people prayed before their journey, turning to God and the protectors, believing that it protects against evil spirits and enemies.

Pilgrim crosses were also erected in honor of church holidays or particularly revered saints. Brothers Cyril and Methodius are recognized as saints and are highly valued in the Slavic world. May 24, the day of their memory, is celebrated as the Day of Slavic Writing.
