In 1995, the city administration announced a competition to create a monument symbolizing Victory. Among the proposed options were images of 'Soviet warriors' and 'Mother Russia', but preference was given to the image of Saint George the Victorious. Only 3.5 months were allocated for the installation of the monument, and on the eve of the anniversary of the Great Victory, May 9, 1995, a consecration and solemn opening of the monument to the defenders of the Motherland in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 took place in the center of the city, in the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, on the territory of the memorial 'Gorky Residents, to the Front'. The monument is given special solemnity by the flowerbeds and well-kept greenery around the pedestal.

The project was created by the famous Nizhny Novgorod sculptor, Honored Artist of Russia T.G. Kholueva, and architect V.D. Vasilyev. A bronze sculpture depicting Saint George the Victorious rises on a square pedestal made of gray granite. With a fierce gaze and a determined hand, he pierces the serpent with a spear, weakened in battle. The sculptor managed to create a psychologically accurate image of the hero, who was beheaded after suffering in 304 but did not renounce his faith. Even after death, George continued to perform miracles, appearing as a rider on a white horse and killing the serpent that devastated the lands of a king in Beirut, which contributed to the conversion of the local people to Christianity. The monument, located in the center of an exhibition of weapons produced in Nizhny Novgorod during the Great Patriotic War, serves as an eternal reminder of the immortal feat of fellow countrymen who gave everything for victory. An inscription on the polished surface of the pedestal reads 'To the Defenders of the Motherland in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.'
