On June 25, 2007, a monument to Vasily Makarovich Shukshin, the famous Russian actor, director, and writer, was unveiled in Novosibirsk. The monument is designed in the form of a stele, created by sculptor Alexey Dyakov. The sculptor aimed to convey the simplicity and essence of Shukshin's personality through his work.

Initially, it was planned to unveil the stele for the writer's 75th anniversary in 2004, but this was only accomplished three years later. The installation of the monument was initiated by the creative intelligentsia of the city, and financial support was provided by the public organization 'Good Deed.' The stele is located at the intersection of Novogodny and Geodetic streets in the Leninsky district of Novosibirsk.

The appearance of the Shukshin monument in Novosibirsk is not accidental: Vasily Makarovich often visited and worked in this city. His stories were published in the magazine 'Siberian Lights,' and at 17 Novogodny Street lived and worked his cousin, artist Ivan Popov. Shukshin's sister, Natalia Makarovna, worked as a teacher at a school in Moshkovo.

Initially, it was planned to install a memorial plaque in memory of Shukshin on the building at 77 Soviet Street, where Ivan Popov lived. However, this idea was not realized, and it was ultimately decided to install the stele.
