The monument to Vasily Kalinnikov, a famous Russian composer born in the Oryol province, was created by sculptor Leonid Bugay and architect Vladimir Blinov.

Vasily Sergeyevich Kalinnikov was born in the village of Voiny in the Mtsensk district of Oryol province. He received his education at the Oryol Spiritual Seminary and continued his studies at the Musical and Dramatic School of the Moscow Philharmonic Society.

In 1990, the competition to create the monument to Kalinnikov was won by sculptor Leonid Bugay and architect Vladimir Blinov. However, it was not until nearly twenty years later that funds were found for the production and installation of the monument, as well as for the improvement of the surrounding area. The bronze elements were produced by the companies 'LitArt' from Zhukovsky and 'Otmennoe Lityo' from Nizhny Tagil.

The monument is executed in the Art Nouveau style of the late 19th century and depicts the composer in a creative fervor under the branches of a viburnum, with a figure of a boy playing a pipe at the bottom. The total cost of the monument and the arrangement of the square amounted to 7 million 500 thousand rubles from the city and regional budgets. The monument was unveiled on August 3, 2009, in the square named after Kalinnikov, next to the children's music school No. 1 named after him.
