On March 3, 1799, a Russian squadron under the command of Admiral F. F. Ushakov successfully completed a military operation to liberate Corfu, the largest and most fortified island of the archipelago.

This significant victory at Corfu and the liberation of the Ionian archipelago had important military-political significance. A Republic of the Seven Islands was established in the liberated territories, the first national Greek state in modern history under the protection of Russia.

For this assault, Emperor Paul I promoted F. F. Ushakov to admiral and awarded him the Order of Saint Alexander Nevsky with diamonds.

The monument to Admiral Ushakov in Kerkyra is located at the foot of the Neo Frourio fortress on Xenofontos Street.

The memorial composition in the historical part of the city was installed in memory of the liberation of Corfu from French occupation in 1798-1799 and the restoration of the episcopal system on the island. For his merits, Fyodor Ushakov was canonized by the Greek church about a year after the monument was unveiled.

According to him, he did not lose a single ship and none of his subordinates were captured. Ushakov won 43 naval battles and suffered no defeats.

In 2001, the Russian Orthodox Church canonized him as the righteous warrior Fyodor Ushakov.

After the 1917 revolution, the Sanaksar Monastery, where the admiral was buried, was closed, and the chapel over his grave was destroyed. It was restored during World War II.
