In 2012, an unusual monument to Mikhail Afanasyevich Bulgakov, the outstanding Russian writer, appeared in Vyazma, in a small Country Park. This monument represents the writer's shadow cast on a gray concrete slab and is the only shadow monument in the world. The main part of the monument is made of gray concrete, on which a black metal silhouette plate of Bulgakov is laid. The writer is depicted in full height in profile, holding a tablet and a pen. Nearby, on a small black slab, an inscription is engraved: "Happiness, like health, when it is present, you do not notice it. Bulgakov M.A. worked in Vyazma from September 1917 to February 1918." This quote is taken from Bulgakov's autobiographical story "Morphine."

The slab correctly states: Bulgakov indeed lived and worked in Vyazma for about six months, serving as a zemstvo doctor. Later, he described this period of his life in the cycle "Notes of a Young Doctor."

The initiative to install the monument belongs to the employees of the Moscow cultural and educational center "Bulgakov House," and the author is the Smolensk metal artist Alexander Sorokin.

Unfortunately, the monument is still little known, but this does not diminish its uniqueness and cultural value.
