The monument, unveiled in 2000, nearly caused a conflict between the Union of Architects of the city and the Chelyabinsk authorities, who debated its placement for a long time. In the end, the most logical location was chosen, next to the Regional Local History Museum, opposite the Prokofiev Concert Hall. The grand opening took place on September 13, 2000, on the day of Chelyabinsk's 264th anniversary. The sculptor is the People's Artist of the Russian Federation V. A. Avakyan.

Prokofiev is depicted sitting in a chair with an open music notebook on his left knee, immersed in thoughts about his new work. The sculpture is set on a low rectangular pedestal made of red granite.
