During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, combat operations also took place on the territory of Romania. In 1888, a memorial was established in the village of Garvan in memory of the Russian soldiers who fought against the Turkish invaders. This granite obelisk is 2.5 meters tall and bears the inscription: "Lord, grant rest with the righteous souls of those who fell for the holy cause. To Ensign Yevgeny Vasilyev of the Ryazan Regiment and 10 lower ranks, who fell on June 10, 1877, during the landing here as the first from the Russian army." Over time, the monument began to deteriorate, but in the 1990s it was restored to its original appearance.

The obelisk was erected on June 16, 1888, in honor of the Russian soldiers who died in battles against the Ottoman occupiers on Romanian soil during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. As a result of this war, Romania gained independence from the Ottoman Empire.
