On May 25, 2019, a liturgy and the solemn opening of a monument to Russian prisoners of war who died during the Russo-Swedish (Northern) War took place on Visingsö Island.

The Russian cemetery, known as Rysskyrkogården, became the resting place for Russian soldiers who died on the island. After three centuries, thanks to the efforts of Russian and Swedish historians, as well as the Russian-Swedish association "Friendship of Småland," the names of 136 Russian POWs were restored on the stones. In total, during the Northern War, at least two thousand prisoners from Russia were held on Visingsö.

The ceremony was attended by the Russian Ambassador to Sweden Viktor Ivanovich Tatarintsev, the Consul General of Russia in Gothenburg Anastasia Fedorova, the archpriest of the parishes of the Moscow Patriarchate in Sweden Archpriest Viktor Lyutik, the rector of the Sergievsky parish in Stockholm Archpriest Vitaly Babushin, as well as representatives of public organizations, Swedes, and Russian compatriots.

The monument was opened thanks to donations, the collection of which was organized throughout Sweden by the Russian-Swedish cultural association "Friendship of Småland" and the deanery of the parishes of the Moscow Patriarchate in Sweden.
