On October 5, 2014, the Russian Military Historical Society installed a sculptural composition in the central square of Maloyaroslavets, opposite the monument to the Heroes of the Patriotic War of 1812, created by Antonio Adamini. The monument is dedicated to Colonel Priest Vasily Vasilykovsky of the 19th Jaeger Regiment, who led Russian soldiers into battle near Maloyaroslavets in 1812. Despite being wounded twice, he remained in the ranks until the end of the battle and became the first priest of the Russian Orthodox Church to be awarded the Order of St. George for bravery.

The author of the monument is People's Artist of Russia Salavat Shcherbakov.

The solemn opening of the monument was attended by the Minister of Culture of Russia Vladimir Medinsky, Governor of Kaluga Region Anatoly Artamonov, Bishop Maximilian of Pesochensk and Yukhnov, State Duma Deputy Yuri Volkov, and representatives of the Russian Military Historical Society. After the ceremony, Bishop Maximilian conducted the rite of consecration of the monument.

Vasily Vasilykovsky was born in Sevsk and graduated from the Spiritual Seminary. During the Patriotic War of 1812, he was appointed as the regimental priest of the 19th Jaeger Regiment, which participated in major battles, including the Battle of Borodino.

The battle near Maloyaroslavets on October 12, 1812, lasted 17 hours. The Russian troops held off the French, who were trying to break through to the Kaluga road, and the city changed hands eight times under the command of M. Kutuzov.

After this battle, Archpriest I. Derzhavina noted: "Priest Vasily Vasilykovsky of the 19th Jaeger Regiment, in the battle on July 15, 1812, near Vitebsk, blessed the regiment with the cross held in front and, despite his wounds, remained in battle, hearing confessions of the wounded. I consider it my duty to report his distinction and request an award for his zeal for faith and service to the Monarch."

Father Vasily, wounded twice in the battle near Maloyaroslavets, remained in the ranks until the end. He died a year later, on November 24, 1813, while participating in the foreign campaign of the Russian army.
