In August 2015, a monument to the outstanding Don Ataman Matvey Ivanovich Platov was unveiled in Rostov-on-Don, whose name has become a symbol of the Don region. The monument is made of bronze and resembles the one that was installed in Moscow two years earlier. Its creators are Rostov sculptor Konstantin Rodionovich Chernyavsky and Moscow architect Shapin.
The composition includes bronze figures of Ataman Platov and a Don horse, placed on a granite pedestal. The monument is located in the center of Rostov, at the intersection of Bolshaya Sadovaya Street and Universitetsky Lane. The opening of the monument was a solemn event, attended by local authorities, representatives of the Cossacks, and guests from Moscow.
The installation of the monument to the legendary Cossack ataman is of great significance for the Don region and is perceived as a step towards immortalizing the great Cossack past and returning to its roots.
