In Papua New Guinea, a solemn opening of the renovated memorial dedicated to the Russian traveler and scientist Nikolai Nikolayevich Miklukho-Maclay (1846, 1888) took place on the Maclay Coast.

The initiators of this noble cause were translator and writer Valery Surin, his wife and colleague Irma Bruni, and their daughter Valentina. This Russian-Italian family has long been interested in the fate of Miklukho-Maclay. Last year, they visited Oceania, going to Cape Garagasi, which was called "Maclay's Coast" on Russian maps. They met with local residents, including descendants of Miklukho-Maclay's friend, the Papuan Tuy.

To protect the cape and the monument from the destructive impact of the sea, the Surin family financed the renovation of the memorial and the construction of a protective wall made of coral material around the cape, where Maclay's hut stood in 1871 and 1872.
