Monument 'Mother and Child' in Rostov-on-Don

In 1979, the 'Mother and Child' monument was installed in Rostov-on-Don, created by architect Mikhail Minkus. The opening of the monument was timed to coincide with Children's Day.

The monument is located in the central part of the city, in Theater Square, near the 1st of May Park. The bronze sculpture depicts a young woman in a long dress, kneeling. With her left hand, she embraces a child, while in her right hand, raised upwards, she holds a dove, symbolizing peace on Earth. This open posture likely symbolizes a desire for peace and friendship. The composition is set on a high rectangular pedestal, faced with gray granite.

Inscribed on the pedestal are lines from Maxim Gorky that support the author's idea: 'Let us glorify the woman, the Mother, whose love knows no barriers, whose breast has nourished the whole world!'

During tragedies related to the loss of children, the residents of Rostov gather at the monument, bringing toys and candles, making it a place for expressing collective condolences.
