In St. Petersburg, many monuments have been erected in honor of poets, writers, military leaders, and politicians. However, in 2015, such an honor was bestowed upon the sailing battleship "Poltava." Built under Peter I, it became part of the Russian Baltic Fleet and participated in significant naval battles of that time.

The monument to the ship was ceremoniously unveiled on March 6, 2015, in the presence of Governor Georgy Poltavchenko. It is located on Voskresenskaya Embankment, near house No. 20, not far from the Peter and Paul Fortress. Here, the river divides into the Great Neva and the Little Neva, creating the water expanse necessary for the ship.

This framed monument is a scaled-down replica of the real "Poltava," with intricate precision in the smallest details of the rigging, including the helm and gangways. The authors of the monument, Alexander Taratynov and Valery Lukin, used a complex combination of materials: the hull is made of bronze, while the rigging is made of brass and copper. The bow of the ship faces the Neva, and the model is presented in a rigged version with the sails furled, giving it a sense of lightness.

The model is mounted on a granite pedestal, where a brief history of the battleship can be read. The height of the monument from the base to the top of the main mast is about 10 meters. The bronze ship seems to hover above the street, supported by a base made of red granite. The monument is adorned with bas-reliefs dedicated to the Battle of Gangut and the Battle of Grengam, as well as an image of the ship "Poltava" itself.

The bas-relief depicting the Russian battleship is based on the work of Dutch engraver Pieter Picart, whose originals are kept in the Russian Museum and the Hermitage. A unique memorial plaque at the base of the pedestal is made in the form of a tattered sheet of paper on which Peter I sketched the prototype of the ship. The emperor personally participated in the design and construction of the battleship.

The hull of the ship is artificially aged, which adds realism to the model and refers to the times of the emergence of the Russian sailing fleet. The name of the ship is associated with Russia's victory in the Battle of Poltava, which is reflected in the decor of the original sailing ship. Here, Bellerophon on Pegasus kills the Chimera, Poseidon on a hippocampus, and the story of Phaethon are depicted. These themes are also visible on the monument thanks to the jeweler's work of the sculptors.

"Poltava" was the first Russian fourth-rate battleship built at the Admiralty shipyards in St. Petersburg. It participated in naval campaigns from 1713 to 1732 but was later dismantled due to wear. In 2018, a replica was launched at the historical shipbuilding yards in St. Petersburg. Today, the sailing ship is moored on English Embankment, where it can be seen by all who wish and compared to the monument on Voskresenskaya Embankment.
