In 2017, a monument to the merchant, the founder of the city, was erected in Stavropol. This art object appeared on General Ermolov Boulevard in honor of the 55th anniversary of the Oktyabrsky District. The author of the monument "To the Merchant-Founder of the City" is sculptor Dmitry Lyndin from Rostov.

The monument depicts a colorful Russian merchant, alongside figures of a cat and a dog. The cat symbolizes attentiveness, while the dog represents loyalty. The creators of the monument assert that the hero of the monument is a collective image of Stavropol's merchant class.

According to legend, Stavropol got its name from a stone cross of unknown origin, discovered by the Don Cossacks, the builders of the first fortress. Since then, the area has been called Stavropol, which in Greek means "cross" and "city." There is another version: the site of the future fortress was marked on maps with a cross, and this mark later gave the city its name.
