A monument has been erected in the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin to the only founder of a city in Russia who has been canonized. This monument is dedicated to Prince George Vsevolodovich and Saint Simon of Suzdal and is located next to the first church of Nizhny Novgorod, the Archangel Michael Cathedral, founded by the Grand Prince in 1221.

Saint Blessed Prince George, from the Rurik dynasty, was the son of the Grand Prince of Vladimir Vsevolod Yuryevich the Big Nest. In 1212, he ascended to the Vladimir grand princely throne and in 1221, with the blessing of his companion, founded Nizhny Novgorod on the banks of the Volga. His companion was Saint Simon of Suzdal, the first bishop of Vladimir on the Klyazma and Suzdal, known as the author of works about the lives of the Kyiv-Pechersk saints of the early 13th century. After their deaths, Prince George Vsevolodovich and Saint Simon were canonized.

The monument to Prince George Vsevolodovich and Saint Simon of Suzdal was created by the well-known Nizhny Novgorod sculptor V. Purikhov in collaboration with architects V. Voronkov and V. Khabelev. The composition includes two bronze figures, 3.7 meters tall, set on a blue granite pedestal with an informational plaque. The total height of the monument with the pedestal is about 7.5 meters. The solemn opening and consecration of the monument took place in February 2008 in honor of the 500th anniversary of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. The authors intended for the figures, symbolizing the secular and spiritual beginnings, to greet the guests of the Kremlin, complementing and telling the story of this ancient city.
