Monument to Empress Catherine in Marks

Фото 1
The monument to Catherine II is located in the city of Marks in the Saratov region. This city was founded by German colonists in 1765 and was originally named Yekaterinshadt. In 1919, after the communists came to power, it was renamed Marxstadt, and in 1943, after the liquidation of the ASSR of the Volga Germans and the deportation of local Germans, the city was named Marks.

The monument to Catherine II was erected in 1852 at the initiative of the elder Pyotr Lippert, but it was destroyed by communists in 1941. In 2007, the monument was restored with funds from local residents and patrons and was ceremoniously opened at its original location.
