In 2014, a solemn opening of a monument in honor of the heroes of World War I took place in Rostov-on-Don. This event was timed to the 100th anniversary of the beginning of one of the most destructive wars, which led to the fall of four great empires, including the Russian Empire. For a long time, this war was slandered, and its heroes were forgotten by the Soviet authorities. Only in recent years have the names of those who fought for Russia and died on the fronts, as the Great War was then called, begun to be remembered.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I, various cities decided to immortalize the memory of its heroes. Rostov-on-Don was no exception: from three proposed options, the project of the honored artist of Russia Sergey Mikhailovich Isakov was chosen. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Rostov Region took on the costs of manufacturing and installing the monument. As a result, a magnificent sculpture was created by the required date, unveiled on August 1, 2014, the day Russia entered the war. Many people attended the ceremony.

The monument is a bronze figure of a soldier 3.5 meters tall in military uniform with a rifle on his shoulder. The St. George's Cross, an award for lower ranks of the Russian Imperial Army given for exceptional feats and held in great respect, is depicted on his overcoat.
