On July 29, 1938, Japanese troops invaded Soviet territory near Lake Khasan, located 130 km southwest of Vladivostok. This marked the beginning of a major military conflict, which had been pre-planned by the Japanese General Staff with the approval of the Emperor of Japan. The aim of the aggression was to capture strategically important heights in the area and annex them to Japanese territory along with the adjacent lands of Soviet Primorye.

However, within two weeks of fighting, Japanese forces were pushed back. As a result, the Japanese army lost over 650 men killed and more than 2,500 wounded. Soviet losses amounted to 1,112 men killed, died from wounds and diseases, missing in action, and perished in accidents, as well as 3,279 wounded.

The Monument to the Heroes of Khasan, a federal significance site, was created by sculptor A.V. Fayndysh-Krandievsky and architects M.O. Bariz and A.Ya. Kolpina. It is located on the top of Mount Krestovaya in the village of Kraskino and stands 17 meters tall. A bronze figure of a standard-bearer, holding a flag with both hands, is mounted on a concrete pedestal. The front side of the pedestal bears the inscription "To the Heroes of Khasan." The bronze figure, cast in Leningrad, weighs about 40 tons.

By order of the commander of the 5th Army, a special construction team was formed, equipped with machinery and materials. Local residents actively donated money for the construction of the monument, which took place from May to August 1968. Initially, it was planned to install the monument on Mount Zaozernaya by Lake Khasan, but due to confrontation with China, it was decided to place it in the village of Kraskino. The sculpture was transported to Mount Krestovaya by two tractors. A special crane, brought from Vladivostok via the port of Posyet, was required for the installation.

The monument was unveiled on August 4, 1968, on the 30th anniversary of the events at Lake Khasan. The prototype for the figure of the standard-bearer was Lieutenant Ivan Nikonovich Moshlyak of the 118th Rifle Regiment of the Achinsk 40th Rifle Division, who raised the flag on the summit of Mount Zaozernaya on August 6, 1938.
