The monument to the outstanding hero of the Caucasian War was established thanks to funds raised by the Cossacks of the city. In the center of Pyatigorsk, in honor of the city's 230th anniversary, a monument to General Alexei Yermolov, known for his participation in the Caucasian War, has appeared.

This monument, located in a park on Lermontov Street, is made of bronze and depicts General Yermolov on horseback at life size. It is set on a pedestal two meters high. The plaque reads: "Yermolov Alexei Petrovich (1777-1861). Hero of the Patriotic War of 1812, commander of the Separate Caucasian Corps, General of Infantry. Made a significant contribution to the establishment and development of Pyatigorsk."

According to the city administration, the cost of the monument project amounted to 5 million rubles. Its construction was financed through sponsorship and donations from local residents, collected by the city's Cossacks.

Alexei Petrovich Yermolov was born in Moscow in 1772, coming from the nobility of the Oryol province. He received his education at the Moscow University boarding school and was enlisted as a non-commissioned officer in the Life Guards Preobrazhensky Regiment in 1787. In 1791, he began military service as a lieutenant under the command of Alexander Suvorov and participated in wars against France in 1805, 1806, and 1807. From 1809, he commanded reserve troops in the Kyiv, Poltava, and Chernigov provinces.

With the onset of the Patriotic War of 1812, Yermolov was appointed Chief of Staff of the 1st Western Army. In the Battle of Borodino, he effectively performed the duties of Kutuzov's chief of staff. After the Russian army crossed the Neman, Yermolov led the artillery of the allied armies and from April 1813 commanded various units. In 1813 and 1814, he participated in battles near Bautzen and Kulm, and in the fights for Paris, he commanded the grenadier corps. He was awarded the Order of Saint George of the 2nd class.

From 1816, Yermolov commanded the Separate Georgian Corps, managed civil affairs in Georgia, Astrakhan, and the Caucasian provinces, and served as extraordinary ambassador to Persia. In the 1818 campaign, he oversaw the construction of the fortress Groznaya and commanded troops sent to subdue the Avar Khan Shamil. In 1819, he began the construction of the fortress Vnezapnaya. In 1823, he commanded military operations in Dagestan, and in 1825, he fought against the Chechens.

From 1827, Yermolov was in retirement, and from 1831, he became a member of the State Council. In 1837, he received the rank of General of Artillery. With the onset of the Crimean War, he was elected commander of the state militia in seven provinces, but he accepted this position only in Moscow. In May 1855, he left the post. The general passed away in Moscow on April 23, 1861. His farewell lasted two days, and in Oryol, upon the arrival of his body, a grand memorial service was held. The square in front of the Trinity Church and the adjacent streets were filled with people.
