In 2008, the first monument to Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky was unveiled in Dobrich, Bulgaria. The monument is located in the central city square between the Yordan Yovkov Drama Theatre and the Art Gallery. The opening ceremony was attended by Sergey Foshkin, advisor to the Russian Embassy in Bulgaria, and Anatoly Shelkunov, the Russian Consul General in Varna.

The idea to create the monument belongs to the Bulgarian Dostoevsky Foundation. The three-meter bronze composition was created by Bulgarian sculptor Hristo Iliev. Engraved on the pedestal made of white and black marble is: "1876. A voice of alarm in defense of the Bulgarians." This expresses gratitude to the writer for his call to help the Bulgarian people after the Turkish massacre during the April Uprising of 1876.

Dostoevsky repeatedly raised the issue of the suffering of the Bulgarians before the Russian emperor, society, and the Church. Along with other prominent representatives of the Russian people, he made a significant contribution to the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule.
