The monument dedicated to the Russian philosopher Nikolai Gavrilovich Chernyshevsky in St. Petersburg is one of the most refined monuments, created in 1947. The project was developed by architect V.I. Yakovleva and sculptor V.V. Lishev. The monument features a stone figure of Chernyshevsky with a book, majestically seated on a massive concrete pedestal, gazing mysteriously into the distance. The height of the monument, including the pedestal, is about three meters.

On April 4, 1936, the Central Executive Committee of the USSR proposed to the Leningrad City Council to commemorate N.G. Chernyshevsky by including the construction of a monument in the city's reconstruction plan.

In the autumn of 1938, the Arts Administration, together with the Leningrad Union of Soviet Architects, announced a nationwide competition for the best monument project, which included 22 designs. In 1940, according to the Resolution of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR "On the Commemoration of N.G. Chernyshevsky," the results of the competition were announced, and the project by sculptor V.V. Lishev and architect V.I. Yakovleva received the first prize.

The bronze sculpture was cast in the spring of 1941 at the "Monument Sculpture" factory. At the same time, excavation began at the site of the monument, and granite blocks for the pedestal were delivered. Sculptor Lishev received the Stalin Prize of the second degree for 1941 for creating this monument.

The beginning of the Great Patriotic War hindered the installation of the monument, and the granite for the pedestal was used for the construction of pillboxes.

In June 1945, a decision was made to resume work on the installation of the monument. Granite was prepared anew, and at the "Monument Sculpture" factory, four torches and the letters for the inscription were cast. The installation of the sculpture was entrusted to "Stalconstructs," while the marble cladding of the monument's foundation was carried out by students of the vocational architectural school.

The solemn opening of the monument took place on February 2, 1947, and in 1948, the square on Moskovsky Avenue, where the monument was installed, was named after Chernyshevsky.
