In the central part of Podgorica, on the eastern bank of the Morača River, near the Blažo Jovanović Bridge, a monument to Alexander Pushkin has been erected. The great Russian poet is depicted with his wife Natalia Goncharova, reading poetry to her.

Due to the close friendly ties between Montenegro and Russia, especially their capitals, Moscow and Podgorica, it was decided in the late 20th century to immortalize Pushkin's memory by installing his sculpture in Montenegro. A group of architects and sculptors was invited to create the monument, including architect Mikhail Korsi and renowned sculptor Alexander Taratynov. Taratynov also created the monument to Vladimir Vysotsky, which is located in Podgorica near the Millennium Bridge. The funding for the sculpture's development was provided by the Moscow government.

By the early 2000s, the idea was realized, and on September 12, 2002, the monument to Pushkin and Goncharova was ceremoniously opened in the center of Podgorica. At the opening ceremony, it was noted that the peoples of Russia and Montenegro have a long history of brotherly ties and a shared faith, and that the monument to the great poet would contribute to strengthening these relations.

Interestingly, every year on the International Day of the Russian Language, celebrated on June 6, cultural events are held at the monument with the participation of officials.

The composition of the monument features a bronze figure of Pushkin passionately reading poetry to his muse, his wife Natalia Goncharova, who is sitting on a bench and presumably enjoying his works. Next to the monument are two commemorative stone slabs. One of them reads: "Monument to A.S. Pushkin. A gift from the city of Moscow to Podgorica," while the other is inscribed with lines from Pushkin's poem about Montenegro: "Montenegrins? What is that? Bonaparte asked, Is it true: This wicked tribe, Does not fear our might..."
